Cecil Beaton’s Garden party
Come and join Cecil Beaton’s Garden party! Experienced through black and white photographs, we can still sense the joy of Stephen Tennant and Cecil Beatons Fete Gallant in the gardens of Wilsford. As you gaze at the images you can hear the shrieks of delight and silly insider jokes. Naive by comparison to the contemporary Bal du Transvestites at Magic City the images are infused with “queer delight”, sublimated into Eighteenth Century tableaus bathed in the dappled light of Tenants arcadian garden. A golden time, the wonder and joy was real and it radiates out from the shots…. And so it began, throughout Cecil Beaton's life there is a sense that he not only sought out Arcadia, but he also believed it existed, perhaps finally finding it at Reddish.

Sophie Charalambous
Currently showing at the Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery in London until Saturday, May 3rd, is “I and the Village,” an engaging exhibition of new works by British-Cypriot artist Sophie Charalambous. Based in Hackney, Sophie recently shared with us the inspiration and creative journey behind this collection of watercolours and monoprints, which beautifully explore her memories and observations of the Cypriot landscape. From the echoes of Chagall’s artistry in the exhibition’s title to the deeply personal connections within her portrayals of nature and village existence, Sophie’s insights offer a rich understanding of the stories and emotions imbued in each piece currently on display.

The Gorgeous Nothings
500 years of history was tangible at Chatsworth earlier this month, as sleepy public rooms were woken with incense and the first steady traipse of visitors’ feet. Were their footfall and voices enough to exorcise the ghosts of the house which may have returned to familiar spaces for a quiet winter snooze.
