Château de La Ballue

and its Gardens

A very French Enchanting Escape

Nestled halfway between Normandy and Brittany, a mere 30 minutes from the iconic Mont Saint Michel, lies a true historical gem: the Château de La Ballue. This 17th-century castle is embraced by gardens that shift between classical, geometric elegance and whimsical, contemporary intrigue. Step into a fairytale come to life!

It’s late April, the morning air still carries a gentle mist. Wisteria vines form a fragrant tunnel, an inviting haven for quiet contemplation. Tulips, peonies, and woodland hyacinths burst into their vibrant prime. Within this garden, seemingly plucked from the pages of a storybook, discover the breathtaking artistry and creativity of topiary. These living sculptures define the castle’s front and back. To the rear, terraced gardens unfold, offering sweeping views of the rolling Breton countryside. This inspiring sanctuary has captivated numerous artists throughout history, including Victor Hugo, Musset, Balzac, and Niki de Saint Phalle, to name but a few.

Marie-Françoise and Alain Mathiot-Mathon, along with one of their sons, Théo, warmly welcome us into the grand courtyard. Owners of the château since 2005, they are accompanied by their charming Chesapeake Bay Retrievers – two adults and four adorable puppies. The Mathiot-Mathon family tirelessly dedicates themselves to the restoration and preservation of this exceptional place, also regularly hosting captivating cultural and musical events.

Wander through the gardens, lose yourself in pathways that meander towards hidden havens: the tranquil pond below, the Temple of Diana, the serene lime tree alley, the whispering undergrowth, the graceful birch grove, the lush fern thicket... Contemporary sculptures are artfully integrated, offering a fresh perspective on the classical design. The labyrinth is attributed to a plan by Le Corbusier, adding a touch of modern mystique. The gardens are open from March to November, inviting exploration throughout the seasons.

The Château itself offers a unique experience with its five distinct suites, each promising a memorable stay. The ground floor unfolds with a series of elegant salons and the charming breakfast room. Every object, every piece of décor, from the rich carpets to the antique furniture, conspires to transport you on a captivating journey through time.

This is an enchanted place that leaves you with one irresistible desire: to return and be captivated once more!
